What Not To Eat While Pregant (1)

In the article before I wrote about some kinds of food that are safe to eat when you are pregnant. How about the foods you should not to eat while pregnant? Understanding about the types of foods that should be avoided during pregnancy can help your baby's growth to be good.

As I wrote earlier, no matter what you eat during your pregnancy, your baby will also come to eat it. Not all the food is good for the baby's growth. Even some foods can be bad for their development impact, both during the in utero or as adults later. Understanding about what not to eat while pregnant is important for you, especially for your baby.


Some kinds of food you should avoid while you are pregnant are :
  • Seafood High in Mercury

Actually, seafood is an excellent source of protein, iron and omega-3 which are very good for your baby's brain development. Even the research found that consuming seafood during pregnancy can help a child's development later during childhood, especially helping the development of verbal skills and patterns of thought. But it is realized that some types of fish contain mercury in large numbers. Excess mercury is also not good because it can disturb the development of the baby's nervous system.

Some species of fish that contain high levels of mercury are: Swordfish, Shark, King mackerel, Tilefish

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) encourage pregnant women to avoid the kinds of fish.
  • Undercooked or Contaminated Seafood

Which is not cooked seafood cooked usually still containing harmful substances, which may be acquired from contaminated marine waters. These substances will greatly affect your baby's development and provides negative impact. Substances originating from contaminated waters can affect the brain and physical development of your fetus. Seafood should be cooked until the temperature reached 63 C.
  • Undercooked Meat, Poultry and Eggs

Undercooked meat or raw eggs can change your metabolism system. Interference may result in the development of bacteria that can poison your food. Furthermore, metabolism disorders can also be experienced by your baby so that brings risk of illness.
  • Unpasteurized Foods
All products containing unpasteurized milk, such as skim milk, cottage cheese and mozzarella cheese, can effect to food-borne illness.

How about dried fish? Is it safe or not for my wife? She is pregnant now.

@ Jon : It is safe as long the fish came from clean water (not contaminated water) and there's no using preservative to make the fish durable.
But if you are not sure, it is better for your wife to avoid the dried fish while pregnant.
